Horizon Europe Project URBREATH

What is URBREATH?

URBREATH is a four-year Horizon Europe-funded project on urban adaptation to climate change. Its aim is to put into practice nature-based solutions (NBS) that will help regenerate public urban spaces. An important factor is the involvement of citizens in the decision-making process.

In the project we learn from the so-called pilot cities. In Pilsen we focus on the transformation of the Republic Square. Using a 3D model of the city (a digital twin of the city), we are simulating the greening of this large space. We model the benefits for the inhabitants, the change towards the environment and quality of life.

Aims of the project:

  • To put into practice nature-friendly solutions to help with the regeneration of public spaces and the regeneration of the city with respect to climate neutrality.
  • To involve citizens in the decision-making process, identifying their needs.
  • To use modern technologies and analyse the impact of nature-friendly solutions.

Results of the project:

  • To learn from pilot cities and put into practice workable and proven solutions that will help with urban regeneration and climate change adaptation.
  • To develop participatory democracy.
  • To use new technologies to strengthen the city’s position in the fight against climate change: use 3D city models (digital twin cities) for urban planning, assessing the quality and benefits of green spaces, simulation models for urban regeneration, analyses of NBS benefits.

Pilsen is the only city in the Czech Republic that is involved in the project. It is represented by our SITMP in a consortium of 37 partners from 12 European countries. The pilot cities include Madrid, Cluj-Napoca, Talinn, Leuven. The so-called follower cities are Pilsen, Athens, Parma, Aarhus, Kajaani.

In the project we use a digital twin city (3D city model) to simulate the deployed nature-based solutions in urban planning. A detailed description of the design conceived for the revitalization of the Republic Square can be found here.
