Digital twin – DUET Project (HORIZON 2020)
What is a digital twin?
A digital twin is a new concept that consists of a constantly learning digital copy of real assets, systems and processes that can be queried for specific results.
DUET’s digital twin uses open data and data models from a variety of sources in the city and integrates them with new technological capabilities including High Performance Computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced analytics to provide a replica of an urban environment where policy experimentation can be safely conducted.
By predicting the behaviour of assets and their ability to deliver specific outcomes within given parameters and cost constraints, the digital twin provides a risk-free experimental environment that informs policymakers and operational managers about what to do with assets in the real world to achieve both the most effective long-term policy outcomes and short-term operational decisions.
Aims of the project:
- Why was the project implemented? The aim was to improve the city’s ability to respond effectively to crisis situations and to optimise urban planning.
- What did we want to change or improve? The project sought to introduce a tool for modelling crisis scenarios, improving traffic management and environmental protection.
Methodology and procedure:
- To use of advanced 3D modelling techniques and integration of data from different sensors to create a dynamic real-time model of the city.
Results and impacts:
- Were the project objectives met? Yes, the project successfully created a functional digital twin of the city of Pilsen.
- What specific changes or improvements were achieved? Thanks to the project, the city now has a tool for simulating traffic flows, analysing noise pollution and planning urban development, which contributes to better decision-making and more efficient management of urban processes.
- Access to the alpha version.
- Solution in ESRI.
Partnership and cooperation:
- The project was implemented in collaboration with partners from Greece, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK, allowing the sharing of know-how and technology across Europe.
Funding and support:
- The DUET project was funded by the HORIZON 2020 programme.
Project Award:
- At the prestigious Smart City Expo World congress in Barcelona, DUET was awarded as the best technical project.
